I recently picked up an RG40XXV after not playing games for about 15 years. My last device was a Dingoo A320. As someone who’s missed the last decade and a half of handheld gaming, I just wanted to say a couple things about the current state of handheld devices and custom firmware. People like to complain about the lower end devices such as the Anbernic XX line, they nitpick about MuOS, etc. But take my word for it, things have never been this polished or affordable.
The economy oriented hardware, despite it’s flaws, is so much better than anything I’ve previously used; it’s not even in the same ballpark. And these rigs are 1/3 of the price we used to pay for much more janky devices. I cannot believe all the features the Anbernic XX line (and other similar spec’d devices) offer considering how little they cost. Its amazing! Sure, QC and screen durability might be questionable, but at this price point I really have a difficult time being too critical about that.
With respect to firmware, MuOS is absolutely outstanding; by far the best custom firmware I’ve ever used on a device like this. It is so unbelievably polished and feature rich compared to the firmware I remember from 15 years ago. The little things like a web based file browser, syncthing integration, a working deep sleep mode, these features are blowing my mind. They just work! And the UI is so intuitive and well designed.
I can’t thank the dev team and all the MuOS supporters enough for churning out such brilliant firmware. These people are doing it for free, and they’ve succeeded in turning already great devices into outstanding devices. That’s a brilliant accomplishment. I’ve had so much fun playing old games with my RG40XXV and MuOS; it’s just such a treat.
We’ve come such a long way. Things have never been this good.
