Actually, this issue is related to PPSSPP, but I seem to be unable to select the PPSSPP tag. Anyway: On MuOS, the font files of PPSSPP (i.e., those .pgf files) appear to be stripped-down versions, which causes the Chinese characters in many PSP games to turn into a short dash (like “-”) when played. After manually replacing them with the original PPSSPP font files, these games work perfectly fine. I haven’t tested whether this happens with Japanese and Korean text, but it’s something to be concerned about.
