All PS1 cores suffer from crackling audio

Potentially due to frame drops, the frame rate fluctuates between around 60 and 59 and probably below that in more demanding instances. The audio crackling is infrequent during less intensive moments of gameplay but I never had this issue with the past muOS version. For example in Final Fantasy VIII when you use summons the audio crackling is very distracting. I am using the default config and a 1x resolution for PS1. I have my files in CHD format, although again this was fine in the last version and I have tried replacing the CHD files although it made no difference. I’m also logged into retroachievements. The only thing I have tried changing to alleviate the audio stutter is changing Maximum Timing Skew to 0.000 due to a reddit post claiming that this may work. I have tried different headphones incase that was somehow the issue but it still persists. I can send a video if need be. This is all after a fresh flash of the latest version of pixie, with the config unaltered except for hotkeys and that setting I mentioned, I also have the compatible bios files scph5500 ect. The core I’ve been using the most has been Swanstation since I prefer it’s accuracy. I also use quality sandisk sd cards so that is not an issue.

Do you have the CPU governor set to performance mode? If not, switching to it will certainly help.

I remember running into occasional audio crackle in SwanStation even with the performance governor though. Maybe there are other tweaks someone can post to fix that :crossed_fingers:

I took the lazy route and went back to PCSX-ReARMed. It runs much better on these devices, and I can’t say I’ve noticed any major accuracy problems (no doubt they do exist for some games though).

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah I’ve made the move to PCSX-Rearmed and since not had any crackling with core clock set to 80 and CPU governor left on On Demand. I was able to get the audio to sound more like Swanstation too by changing the driver to alsathread and interpolation to gaussian. The accuracy differences are probably unnoticeable in actual gameplay unless you know what to look for but honestly I was just romanticising Swanstation emulating the PS1 more accurately as I am playing these games for the first time and want the best possible classic experience on the software side. Strangley the Swanstation core on the last muOS version perfomed much better but for now I will stick with PCSX-Rearmed.
