Context

I was on a version of Banana [I believe BIG] – None the less, I used DiskPart to Clean then format both SD cards then formated the image to SD1 using Rufus - 4.6; and using DiskPart to format SD 2 to exFAT.

The device goes through the flash/initial setup displaying the progress meter at the top with the muOS logo and clever subtitles cycling at the bottom. Once completed it goes through all the credits [thank you all btw for everything you do] it displays that it will reboot.

Once it reboots it comes back with the logo then moves to a black screen with the LED still on; No progress to any UI – After 10 mins or so I do either the following:

  • Press the R reset button on the right side: this starts the cycle over
  • Use the shutdown hotkey: after a couple seconds the Green LED shuts off

Logs below

Try this:
Take out cards, press reset 3 times, plug in cards, plug in charger, hit reset once

This really sounds like your lid sensor is not working properly, so when the device first boots into the install and there’s no sleep function active, it works as intended, but after that, when booting into the system itself to reach the UI it interprets the lid as closed and goes to sleep.
To test that out you can flash the 35xxPLUS image, it does not have the lid sensor logic, and will ignore it, so if my theory about this issue is correct it should boot to the main UI without issues. Testing another cfw with lid support can also help identify the issue if it repeats itself. If the lid sensor is the culprit, usually just making some adjustments to its position inside the device seems to fix most issues users have found.

Also, the checksum you provided does not match with the one in the download links for the 35xxSP image. The sha256 hash should be 73d722dccbcc15bc61232d37dfaad5a37ca1e7280b863ec54897751761f7e00a muOS-RG35XX-SP-2502.0_PIXIE-7c4e6a8f.img.gz
Unless you uncompressed the image, but that shouldn’t be necessary for the majority of flashing software.

Thanks for the input – I ran the checksum on the uncompressed iso; I have started over once more using Raspberry PI Imager instead of Rufus & to the compressed file rather than decompressing it first, and also downloaded from Mega instead [ i read online rufus handles SD cards poorly compared to USB, not sure that matters but eliminating that anyway ]

I was put down that rabbit hole from looking at the logs and asking chatgpt what it thought lol but what I noticed in the boot log was UNIONFS i think it was called was showing problems but I didnt think to look for any issues with the lid especially maybe the dmesg log

Once its done with this process if it continues to have the same behavior I’ll pull the log file from the SD card because I’m at least able to see its file structure when adding it back to the PC after.

I don’t know if the sleep behaviour gets written to any log, but if it does, you can also have an answer if it is being triggered or not, pointing to the fail on the lid sensor.

Well, that explains why the system is working but you got no image. It thinks an HDMI cable is connected, so it is enabling the HDMI output and disabling the device screen. I wasn’t expecting for that.
I don’t know how to fix that, since there may be some kind of short in the HDMI slot triggering its positive connection status on boot. Maybe cleaning the port with some contact cleaner and isopropyl alcohol should be your first steps.

There is probably something you can edit in the boot scripts to disable the HDMI detection on boot too, it is a solution to turn the device useable again, just not a real solution to the issue you are having.

edit: It was not an issue for you in any version of Banana cause back then HDMI out was turned on and off within the hdmi menu, but since the display output changing while the system was running was causing an assortment of issues with the device’s displays, it was dropped in favor of HDMI being detect at boot.

.. sum bitch : This could be causing some kind of connection to trigger the port. I have twin toddlers that are starting to show interest in video games and what better way than to start them on the classics.

Give me about an hour to get back to my workstation and I can send you something that will disable the HDMI detection routine.

I also recommend those lil’ rubber bungs you can get for various ports. Amazon and Aliexpress will have a general assortment.

Hell yeah mate – I’ll try cleaning that port to be 100% sure thats not the root cause. But very excited you have a bandaid / jb weld route

Oooh that’s nasty! lol
I have no doubt that is the issue! (But i have been wrong before )
I’m glad we figured it out.

yeah hell, I was going a different route. From a different log I was seeing mount issues from UNIONFS about mounting issues [ im a sys admin so I have to dig through logs all the time fml ] and the paths reminded me on sd2 i have /roms and /ports so i had remade the directories at least.. but i dont think that would stop the display which you hit on the nail.. fuckin awesome troubleshooting lol

Here you go! Download the following attachment and place it on the root of SD1. The startup process will run, look for this script, and it will use sed to change the device mode permanently to 0 meaning handheld mode only.

hell yeah thanks for that fix; working through all this + me in my career field + my tinker brain makes me want to get involved in shit like this. I’ve had all the programming learning I think I can think of from my bachelors and part of masters and take the free lessons all the time but actually implementing them i get like writers block cause i can never think of a project i’d be really hyperfocused to stick with, but I still feel like I don’t know shit. I’m a sys admin by day so I deal with linux servers and have to really dig to fixure shit out when i dont know wtf im looking at lol

One of the biggest changes for me personally is that I essentially removed myself from the IT world for real life work. I still deal with technology but in a different way.

I too also feel like I don’t know shit. There are some days that I am completely out of it and feel like I am out of my depth. Then the next day I’m completely fine and can get a heck of a lot done. All that really matters is that you have a spark for tinkering, don’t stop learning, and as always the best way to learn is to break stuff!
