Cleaning up Save States

Hey gang, I’m building a few RG35XXSP to give as gifts this Christmas. My strategy is to get everything working on one device, then make a backup image of the entire SD card.

I’ve disabled auto state saves for FBNeo, since most of the time you want to start an arcade game from the beginning.

Before I snapshot the SD card image, I am removing all of the files from the MUOS/save/state/core/* folders.

I noticed there are an .hi and .nv file in the ‘file’ directory. Are these for NVRam and High Score? I’m going to assume it’s save to clean out all these directories contents since they were empty when I first installed MuOS.

Anything else I should look out for before cloning my storage card?

Here are my tweaks in case anyone else is interested in building a device as a gift:

  • Install all your ROMs into the correct subfolders in /SD1/MUOS/ROMS
  • Play test your games to make sure they work
  • Disable auto save states for FBNeo (most arcade games won’t need this)
  • Wipe all files from each core state subdirectory /SD1/MUOS/save/state/CORENAME/*
  • Wipe in-game save data and high scores from /SD1/MUOS/save/file/CORENAME/*
  • Bind R1 as Turbo enable button in Retroarch FBNeo core (for arcade shooters, save your thumb!
  • Install a theme that you like or use the default MuOS theme

Kiosk Mode Settings - I feel these are pretty good defaults for a non-techie who just wants to play some classic games. It allows one default collection which keeps it simple for users who just want a small list of favorites and don’t need folders.
