Is the RetroArch menu supposed to be available from within a Pico8 game using MENU+X? I want to change / view some settings, and all I get when I press this combination is the X button acting on its own.

If you are using the external pico8 core, the one that uses your bought copy of pico8 from lexaloffle, that is a standalone application and not a retroarch core, so there’s no retroarch menu to be accessed.
You can still use fake8, this one is a retroarch core, and it will give you the full gama of retroarch options, but last time i tested the performance was not great, and you can’t use splore with it.
