If I close the lid, it doesn’t enter sleep mode. I had to reflash the OS to get it to enter sleep mode, but after a rockbox crash that led me to press the reset button, it stopped working asit did. I’m unsure if that’s the reason, but it’s the only thing that comes to mind. Further resets did not return the function. Curiously, if I try to press the power button with the lid closed, it doesn’t go to sleep mode, the lid has to be open. So the system still registers the closing of the lid, it just fails to activate sleep mode.

Rockbox application sets some lower level system variables so that it can function correctly.
By pressing reset and not using the safe reboot or force quit hotkey you are left with a potentially broken system.
In future it is not a good idea to use the reset button unless you are desperate and the hotkeys do not function.
Is that the case even through PortMaster?
It doesn’t matter if it was downloaded through PortMaster or installed manually from their repository. It is the same code.
