Themes 2.0

ES-DE have a theming engine that provides a flexible and advanced allows themes to be highly configurable without requiring multiple separate theme packages. I think this could inspire a Theme 2.0 support.

Currently all themes ship certain assets or just minor color changes as a separate theme.

But in ES-DE all that is now configured via the main theme.

HoloLive for example in MUOS would just be one theme where in the customization settings you could set the colors and the icons, thus reducing the giant theme list and making themes more dynamic.

  • Allow the colors to be changed
  • Allow icons to be changed

The goal is simply to allow more advanced themes but also compartmentalize themes and not have the same theme copied many times for minor color changes.

GIFs and Webp animated

One thing ES-DE does not allow but could be possible if you take inspirations from other frontends is animated gif or webp backgrounds.

We did this and did not like where it was heading, it was not performant and is not one of our goals for a streamlined performant frontend.

Regarding your other ideas, some themes already have this in place just like the standard MustardOS theme. You can go into the Customisation menu and look at Alternative Theme. This allows theme creators to create alternative colours etc.
