What happened to the Wi-Fi toggle?

We decided to remove the Wi-Fi toggle for a few key reasons:

It didn’t actually improve performance or save battery

Turning off Wi-Fi had no noticeable effect on how fast the system ran or how long the battery lasted. The devices are already quite efficient as much as possible, and Wi-Fi wasn’t using any extra power in the background.

Bluetooth depends on Wi-Fi being enabled

On these devices, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth share the same chip. So if you turned off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth would stop working too. That means wireless controllers, headphones, and other Bluetooth devices wouldn’t be able to connect.

The Wi-Fi hardware was never truly switched off

Even when the toggle was set to “off”, the hardware stayed powered on behind the scenes. Due to the way the system works, the toggle didn’t actually disable anything, it just gave the appearance of control without doing anything useful.

These aren’t phones!

Unlike a traditional mobile phones, these devices, muOS specifically, do not scan for networks or perform background activity using Wi-Fi other than what you are using it for. The only regular system network task is a quick ping to update the system clock every 10 seconds, which uses next to no data or power.
