Why extra cores are now being provided as separate downloads

Starting from the Goose release of muOS, we have made a key change in how cores, and extra add-on systems, are distributed. You may have noticed we are no longer preinstalling everything on the base installable release and there is actually a good reason for it.

What has changed?

We are now only including a smaller, focused set of assignable cores by default primarily for mainstream systems, essential functionality, and a few key alternatives. Anything beyond that (specialised systems, alternative cores, experimental additions) is now provided as optional extra packages.

Extras can be found here!

Why not just include them all like before?

Because not everyone needs everything! While it is technically possible to roll all extras into one big file, it raises a few problems:

  • Longer install times
  • Larger storage footprint
  • Increased confusion, especially for new users who don’t know which system uses which core.

By trimming the default install down to just what is needed to get up and running, we improve clarity and performance. Users can still install whatever extras they want, just on their terms.

So what’s the benefit?

  • Better maintainability - We keep the core of muOS clean and stable
  • Smaller downloads - Faster updates and installs for everyone
  • More control - You only install what you actually need

muOS is built to be modular. That means you are free to customise your setup while we keep the base system light, fast, and focused.

So if you need extra cores, they’re just a few clicks away… but if you don’t, you’re not dragging them around for no reason!

Manual download and install links

It’s always best to use the on-device Core Downloader mechanism, however sometimes you are either in a tough spot and can’t get access to internet, or you are using a device that doesn’t have the capability. Feel free to click the link below which will take you to a list of downloads that you can install via the Archive Manager.
