Auto save sometimes fails when device shutdown after sleep x amount of time

Step to reproduce:

  1. Set sleep function to “sleep 30s + shutdown”.
  2. Open a game.
  3. Press power button for device to go to sleep and wait 30s
  4. Boot the device up.

Sometime device will boot into old auto save state instead of create new auto save state. This issue doesn’t happen consistently but about 1 in 3 times the device failed to auto save state before shutdown.

Thank you for your detailed issue. However if it only happens sometimes then you may want to regard autosave as a best effort feature, and if the shutdown lands before the save completes, the device will fall back to the last autosave. That is expected.

In the meantime, the safest workaround is a manual save before putting the device to sleep/shutdown. Think of autosave as a safety net, not the trapeze. :slightly_smiling_face:

We can look into it further but we need quite a few more details then what you’ve provided, the more the better.

  • Device type
  • Game title + version
  • Storage free space (you can find this in the information module)
  • Any RetroArch changes
  • All of your current power settings

Things that you can try now:

  • Increase the sleep timer (e.g., 60s) or use “Sleep Until Wake” instead of “Sleep + Shutdown”
  • Manually save and wait for the save message to pop up before sleeping
  • Avoid forcing sleep during heavy in game activity
  • Ensure your storage isn’t nearly full

Thanks for responding.

Here are some details about my device and settings that I used:

  • Device type: RG40XXV
  • Game title: Chrono trigger (snes) USA version
  • Storage free space: 24,57GB (Primary Storage), 59,46GB (Secondary storage), 4,85GB (System storage)
  • RetroArch changes:
    • Video/Output/Threaded Video = on
    • Scaling/Aspect Ration = Core provided
    • Input/Retropad Binds/Port 1 Controls/Analog to Digital Type = Left Analog
    • Saving/Maximum Auto-Increment Save States = 20
    • Saving/Increment Save State Index Automatically = on (not sure if I change this)
    • Achievements = on
    • User Interface/Menu = rgui
  • Power settings:
    • Sleep funtions: Sleep 30s + Shutdown
    • Low battery indicator: 25
    • Idle input sleep timeout: 10m
    • Idle input display timeout: 5m
    • Mute on display timeout: Enabled

This issue also happen when Sleep funtions set to “Sleep 30m + Shutdown” or “Sleep 60m + Shutdown”. I just use “Sleep 30s + Shutdown” here as example because it easier to test.
Weirdly enough this issue doesn’t seem to occur when Sleep funtions set to “Instant shutdown”

Trying for the past hour on the 40V, 40H, 35H and 28H with the same settings and content and I cannot replicate. So it may already be fixed in Canada Goose which will be out soon. I’ll leave this open for now.

Thanks for trying, I will test again after the update is released and let you know.

Just to note, I am also not able to replicate this issue on the 40V or 34H on latest test release.

After reformat both sd card and install Canada Goose as new, sometimes the device still failed to save to the auto slot, but device also save to normal slot when shutdown so I was able to load from normal slot when auto slot failed to save.
